How to edit PDF metadata

Upload your PDF — its current title, author, subject, keywords, and producer are shown (any of these may be blank if the PDF never had them set). Edit any field and click "Save & Download PDF." This only changes the document's metadata, not its visible content.

Metadata is easy to forget about because it's invisible on the page itself, but it's exactly what shows up in a browser tab title, a file manager's preview pane, or search results for a hosted PDF — a document still titled "Scan_20240311" or authored by whoever's laptop it was scanned on looks unpolished even if the content itself is fine.

What is PDF metadata used for?
PDF metadata (title, author, subject, keywords) is what shows up in a browser tab or file manager preview, and what search engines and document management systems index. Editing it doesn't change the visible content of the PDF.
Why would I edit a PDF's metadata?
Common reasons: cleaning up a generic title like "Untitled" or "Scan001" before sharing a document, removing your name from the author field on something you're distributing anonymously, or setting a proper title/author so the PDF is easier to find later in a file manager or document system.
Can I clear a metadata field instead of just changing it?
Yes — clear any field's text box and save, and that field is set to empty rather than keeping the original value.
Does editing metadata affect the PDF's content or file size?
No — metadata is a small separate block of information from the page content, so editing it doesn't touch what's visible on the pages and changes file size by only a few bytes.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No — reading and editing metadata happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib. Your eyes only — we never get a look.
