How to edit a PDF online
Upload your PDF. If it's a form with real fillable fields, they're detected automatically and shown as a list to fill in. Otherwise, select the Text tool — click directly on any existing line of text to replace it, or click empty space to add new text. Other tools work the same way: pick Image, Rect, Ellipse, Line, Highlight, Whiteout, or Draw, then click (or drag, for Line/Draw) on the page. Drag the amber handle to reposition anything, or use the × to delete it. Click "Save & Download PDF" when you're done.
How does replacing existing text actually work?
With the Text tool active, existing lines of text are highlighted as you hover — click one to edit it in place. Behind the scenes this covers the original text with a precisely-sized white patch and draws your new text in the exact same spot, which is the same technique real online PDF editors use for this (none of them, including Sejda, truly rewrite the PDF's internal text data — their own help docs point to a whiteout fallback for text that won't edit cleanly). Replacement text is drawn with a standard font matched to the original's style (serif/sans-serif, bold/italic) rather than reusing the PDF's own embedded font — some real-world PDFs embed font files that render specific characters incorrectly with no warning, so matching by style keeps the result reliably correct. If the matched style still can't cover every character you typed, you'll be prompted to pick a different replacement style.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?
No — everything happens locally in your browser, which is what makes it safe: your document is never sent to a server. See how it works.
Can I fill out a PDF form with this?
Yes — if your PDF has real fillable form fields, they're detected automatically on upload and listed for you to fill in directly, no need to hunt for the right spot to click.
Can I add a signature or image to my PDF?
Yes — the Image tool lets you place a picture (like a scanned signature or a logo) anywhere on the page, and the Draw tool lets you sketch a freehand signature directly with your mouse or touchscreen.
Can I edit a scanned PDF or one made from a photo?
Not the underlying text — a scanned page is just a picture, so there's no real text to click and replace. You can still cover parts of it with Whiteout and type new text on top, or add images, shapes, and a signature, which covers most scanned-document editing needs even without a text layer.
