How to make a PAN card photo online
A PAN card (Permanent Account Number, India's tax identification document) photo has a genuinely different specification from a passport photo, not just a smaller version of the same square crop. The official size is 25 mm × 35 mm (2.5 cm × 3.5 cm) — a portrait rectangle with roughly a 5:7 aspect ratio, compared to the passport photo's perfect 1:1 square. Using a passport photo for a PAN application (or vice versa) means either awkward padding or an incorrect crop, because the shapes themselves don't match, independent of the size difference.
PAN applications are processed through one of two authorized agencies, NSDL (Protean eGov Technologies) or UTIITSL, depending on which portal you apply through, and both expect the photo in JPEG format with a background of plain white. Online applications typically enforce a fairly small maximum file size for the photo upload field specifically — often in the range of 20-50 KB, noticeably smaller than what's typically allowed for a passport photo upload — so after generating your photo here, check the specific portal's stated limit and use Compress Image if needed to bring it under that ceiling. For paper-based PAN applications, the physical photo is affixed to the form and, depending on the form version, your signature may need to be made partially across one edge of the photo — a physical-form requirement that doesn't apply to a digital upload.
