How to make a UK passport photo online
HM Passport Office requires a printed photo 45mm tall by 35mm wide, or for an online renewal, a digital photo between 600×750px and 750×930px, sized 50KB to 10MB and saved as a JPEG. One detail that trips people up: unlike many countries, the UK's official guidance actually recommends a plain light grey or cream background rather than pure white — a stark white backdrop can make it harder to tell where your photo ends and the white of the application form begins. This tool defaults its background swap to a light grey rather than pure white for that reason.
Glasses are not permitted in a UK passport photo, even prescription ones, unless you have a genuine medical reason and can provide supporting evidence — take them off before your photo. You'll also need a neutral expression with your mouth closed, both eyes clearly open and visible, and no head covering unless it's worn daily for religious or medical reasons (in which case your full face, from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead, must still be visible).
