How to make an India passport photo online

Passport Seva, India's official passport application system, requires a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) color photograph. Beyond the size, the formal requirements are specific: a white or very light, plain background (no patterns, shadows, or other people visible), a photo taken within the last 6 months so it reflects your current appearance, a neutral expression with your mouth closed, both ears visible (so hair shouldn't cover them), and no glare on glasses if you wear them for the photo — many applicants are advised to remove glasses entirely to avoid a rejection on this point.

For online applications through the Passport Seva portal, a digital photo upload is accepted directly in many application types, in addition to the option of carrying a physical photo to your appointment. The digital upload has its own technical constraints beyond just the crop dimensions — typically a maximum file size in the range of a few hundred KB, in JPEG format — so after generating your photo here, check that the download fits within whatever limit the specific application step you're on states, and use Compress Image if you need to shrink it further.

What size photo does Passport Seva require?
2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm), color, with a white or very light plain background, taken within the last 6 months. Select "India Passport" from the size dropdown above and this tool crops to that exact size automatically.
Can I wear glasses in an Indian passport photo?
It's generally discouraged unless medically necessary, and if you do, there must be no glare or reflection obscuring your eyes. Most applicants find it simpler to remove glasses for the photo entirely.
Is the requirement different for a minor's passport photo?
The size and background requirements are the same 2 × 2 inch, plain white background specification. The main practical difference is that photographing a young child with a fully neutral expression and both ears visible can take a few attempts — the crop and background tools here work the same way regardless of the subject's age.
How is this different from a PAN card or Aadhaar photo?
PAN card photos use a completely different rectangular size (25 × 35 mm, not a 2 × 2 inch square) — see the dedicated PAN card photo size page. Aadhaar-linked photos share the passport's 2 × 2 inch square specification and are covered by the "India Aadhaar-linked" preset on the main Passport Photo Maker.
