How to remove a photo's background, free

A real on-device AI model cuts out the subject automatically — no account, no upload, no green screen needed.

The quick version

Upload a photo to Remove Background and the subject is cut out automatically — no manual selection, no tracing an outline by hand. Download it with a transparent background, or swap in a solid color (white, light grey, blue, or red) if you need it to look like a normal photo rather than a cutout.

How this actually works

This isn't a simple "delete this specific background color" filter, which only works on plain, uniform studio backdrops. It's a real image segmentation AI model that identifies which pixels belong to the subject versus the background, pixel by pixel — which is why it works on ordinary photos with busy, uneven, or complicated backgrounds, not just ones shot against a green screen. The model's files download to your browser the first time you use the tool (cached after that), and every photo you process runs entirely on your own device — nothing is ever sent to a server.

Transparent background vs. a solid color

Which one you want depends on what happens to the image next:

If you specifically need a passport or visa photo (correct size and crop, not just background), use Passport Photo Maker instead — it includes the same background removal built directly into the sizing workflow, so you don't need to remove the background and then crop separately.

Getting a clean result

The model does best with one clear subject against a background that's reasonably distinct in color or brightness from the subject itself. Low contrast between subject and background, very busy/cluttered backgrounds, or multiple overlapping subjects can make the cut edge less precise, particularly around fine detail like hair. A well-lit, front-facing photo with the subject clearly separated from what's behind them will consistently give the cleanest result.

Is background removal actually done by AI, or is it a simple color filter?
It's a real AI model (a segmentation model run via TensorFlow.js) that identifies which pixels belong to the subject versus the background, not a simple "remove this specific color" filter — which is why it works on photos with busy, non-uniform backgrounds, not just plain studio backdrops.
Does the AI model run on my device or on a server?
On your device. The model's files download to your browser the first time you use the tool (a one-time download, cached after), then all processing happens locally — your photo itself is never uploaded or sent anywhere.
What kind of photos work best?
One clear subject (a person, product, or object) against a background that's reasonably distinct from the subject gives the cleanest cutout. Busy backgrounds, low contrast between subject and background, or multiple overlapping subjects can make the edges less precise.
Transparent background or a solid color — which should I choose?
Transparent (PNG) if you're placing the subject onto something else — a different background, a design, a slide. A solid color if the result needs to look like a normal photo on its own, most commonly white, light grey, blue, or red for passport, visa, or ID photo backgrounds.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No — the AI model downloads once to your browser, then every photo you process runs entirely on your device. See how it works.
